Slate answers pressing green questions

Garden-Variety Activism

Can I plant some vegetables in the vacant lot nearby?

There's a vacant lot near my home that's been sitting empty for a long time. I'm interested in trying to start a community/co-op garden. It would be an attractive place instead of an empty lot. We could possibly get some local businesses to donate equipment and topsoil. People could grow their own organics and, if they sell some, put a percentage of the money back into the co-op. People without a cash investment can contribute their time instead. The city could add this to one of its "green" spaces. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of time to organize this, I'm relatively new to the community, and I grow nice houseplants but know almost zilch about farming.

Carbon for Clunkers

How much will the popular trade-in program really do for the environment?

The $1 billion Cash for Clunkers program has been so popular that it ran out of funds a week after launching, and now the Senate is debating whether it deserves an additional $2 billion. But how does the environmental argument for scrapping all those usable, old cars stack up? After all, those new, energy-efficient cars aren't going to just drop out of the sky, fully assembled.

Hiatus over!

Dear Green Memphians,

I've been on a bit of a hiatus over the summer but am back in full swing now! Please let me know what ideas and information you want to see here at Green Jobs Memphis. We continue to post daily news updates about green happenings in the U.S. and the world.

In the next few weeks, we'll have several new reports on the local green economy for you to read and share. Also, the Memphis Green Scene Examiner column is continually updated with new stories about green whatnots in Memphis and the Mid-South.

Thanks,
